Introduction
Welcome!
I've decided to start a developer blog for the game project I've been working on. It's an RPG inspired by a 90s Sonic cartoon that fans call "Sonic SatAM". Here's a first look:Overview:
I have always wanted to make an RPG and I've always wanted to make a Sonic SatAM game. The more I thought about what an ideal Sonic SatAM game might look like, the more these goals seemed naturally aligned.
The fundamental features of this game will be:
- Turn-based battle system with physical encounters (not random encounters)
- This means characters have items, equipment, stats, and leveling
- There will be a range of special abilities that rely on "skill points", which parallels the concept of magic and mana in classic RPGs
- Similar to Mario RPG, if you press a key during your attack, or during an opponents attack, you can either do extra damage, dodge an attack or reduce damage from an attack
- Puzzles which can be solved using special character-specific actions
- Sonic can use his classic super speed
- Bunny can use her robotic arm extension (which acts similar to Link's hook shot)
- Sally can hack computer systems using Nichole
- Rotor can use a variety of interchangeable weapons
- "Megamuck" gun (Gets enemies stuck)
- Freeze ray (Slows enemy down)
- Plasma blaster (Destroys lower level enemies)
- Antoine can "accidentally" set off traps without them hurting the party
I am going to spend later posts deep diving on my approach toward creating the art, design, music/sound, game design, and story. I hope this blog helps you get a feel for how much passion and intention has gone into every aspect of this project.

In order to develop this game in a reasonable amount of time with a reasonable amount of quality, I am relying heavily on the work of other people. Throughout the project I'm going to try and ensure I call out the incredible work of others that I've been able to leverage for this project.
