The Story

What I wanted to do with this game is ensure that the story both fit into the existing lore, while also not stepping on what I consider to be "new canon" (Sea3on). For that reason, this story is meant to take place somewhere in Season 2, or possibly between Season 1 and Season 2.

The game begins with the Freedom Fighters on a mission to damage some infrastructure of Robotropolis, per usual, but they are suddenly interrupted with the presence of what appears to be another group of Freedom Fighters. This other rebel group, which calls themselves "The Rebellion", appear to be older, and more effective, than our heroes.

The Rebellion engages with the Freedom Fighters, telling them to "get out of the way", basically. Things will get heated and both groups will fail their missions, causing a feud between them. The Rebellion leader will claim that the Freedom Fighters are "amatures with no military experience", claiming that they themselves are former members of King Acorn's royal guard and that the Freedom Fighters should "leave this work to the professionals".

So after a lot of back and forth, after demeaning Princess Sally and her team, the Rebellion eventually starts to run the show, and even treats Knothole like a military base. Sally doesn't like their attitude, but feels compelled to let them lead the missions given their background, presumed authority, and effectiveness.

Sally will try to make occasional suggestions, which are then brushed off as obvious by the Rebellion leader. As a callback to "Sonic Racer", Sally will tell the Rebellion team to "remember to take out the backup generator" in a mission meeting, to which she will be met with a hostile tone: "of course we plan to do that, we're not fools"!

Later, it is revealed that the Rebellion are lying about their background, and are actually members of the nation who fought Mobotropolis during the Great War (Name not yet decided). They are seemingly more effective against Robotnik only because they are specifically allied with Snively, who is helping them sabotage Robotnik's systems using inside information. Snively's plan is to coordinate a coupe in exchange for the right to rule Robotropolis.

After a well-executed mission, the Rebellion actually takes control of Robotropolis, but in a major betrayal, they jail Robotnik, Snively, and the Freedom Fighters. Everyone learns of the true origins of the Rebellion, but no one knows Snively's role in all this. Robotnik offers the Freedom Fighters a temporary truce to team up to take down the Rebellion group. The Freedom Fighters reluctantly accept the deal, given that they have no other options.

Now Robotnik becomes a playable character!

Anyways, that's what I've got so far. Let me know what you think!
